Days of Wine and Roses

Joe Clay

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 20s-40s

Joe is in public relations and begins as a “social drinker” who uses alcohol as a crutch to be flirtatious and to open the door to “magic time.”  He is handsome and fairly successful. He introduces Kirsten to alcohol to “loosen her up” and so that she won’t be upset with his drunkenness by being drunk as well. They love each other, but drinking is what bonds them. The two end up on a bleak road where one cannot stay sober while living with the other. Charismatic and well-meaning but manipulative.

NOTE: Shares intimate moments with Kirsten, and interacts with his young daughter, Debbie.

Kirsten Arnesen Clay

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 20s-40s

Kirsten begins as a teetotaler. She’s a good-hearted, smart, bubbly, bright-eyed woman – with a touch of naivety. Kirsten ends up turning into a bored housewife, evocative of the 1960s, with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. She descends into the depths of alcoholism.

NOTE: Shares intimate moments with Joe, and interacts with her young daughter, Debbie.

Ellis Arnesen

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 50s-60s

Widower and long-suffering but caring father of Kirsten. Blames his daughter’s alcoholism on Joe. A taciturn and stern individual.

NOTE: Interacts with his young granddaughter, Debbie.

Jim Hungerford

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 40s-60s

A recovering alcoholic who is the leader of the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous, Jim is Joe's sponsor. He’s easy-going, dependable, and devoted.

Debbie Clay

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 8 years old

The daughter of Joe and Kirsten. She has grown up in their drunken household and, as such, is self-contained, quiet, and reserved.
