Character Descriptions

The Village Players of Hatboro strive to provide people of all backgrounds the opportunity to participate in live theater productions. We encourage applicants regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identification, national origin, ability, or sexual orientation to join us.

No experience is required to audition and all positions are volunteer (non-union/non-paid).

Arcadia

Thomasina Coverley

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 18-mid 20s

She is the oldest daughter of the house. Thoughtful, aware, and a mathematical prodigy, she has a disarming innocence that easily coexists with her voracious intellect.

Septimus Hodge

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Mid 20s

Thomasina’s tutor. He is a reasonable young man with a good head on his shoulders, well-educated; a good & caring teacher to Thomasina. A bit liberal with his affections, he is witty, attractive, and good at navigating challenging social situations.

Lady Croom

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Late 30s-40s

Thomasina’s mother. Lady Croom rules the Coverly estate with an iron fist. She is strong-willed, stylish, funny, and the center of whatever room she happens to be in.

Ezra Chater

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Early 30s

A self-styled poet and lover, but not great at either. He’s passionate, but also easily manipulated by others. His wife has been carrying on behind his back for many years.

Richard Noakes

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s

The landscape designer. He likens himself to being a prophet of the “new aesthetic” that leans towards the gothic. He is a bit of a sycophant, but he’s an able craftsman & a likable gentleman.

Captain Brice, RN

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Mid 30s

Brother of Lady Croom. He is a solid military man, who happens to be one of Chater’s wife’s lovers. It is under his auspices that the Chaters’ have been invited to Sidley Park. He is noble, loyal and ambitious.

Jellaby

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s-60s

Butler for the Coverly home, Sidley Park. He is officious, succinct and aware.

Augustus Coverly

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Early 20s

Thomasina’s brother, fifteen. He is growing into the role of “man of the house”. Quite sure of himself, he is also a bit full of himself, and, as is often the case with teen-agers, has very little patience with adults. He doubles with Gus Coverly.

Hannah Jarvis

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 30s

An academic with a best selling book under her belt, studying the garden history of Sidley Park. She is sharp, serious, and a good researcher. Hannah collaborates (warily) with Bernard and also with Valentine, though she rejects the romantic advances of both. She has a good moral compass and good instincts.

Bernard Nightingale

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 40s

An academic who is in the early “still proving himself” stage of his career, and is therefore a bit gung-ho. He has his hypotheses, and will find the nuggets of information that will help prove him right. He’s clever and personable, but not the best with people, occasionally saying the wrong thing.

Valentine Coverly

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Late 20s-30s

Young man of the house. A scientist who is able to explain complex ideas well. He has a small crush on Hannah, but assumes that nothing will come of it.

Chloe Coverly

Female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 18-25

Young lady of the house. She has a crush on Bernard. She is thoughtful, but not in an academic way. She is personable and open to new people and experiences.

Gus Coverly

Male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), Early 20s

Youngest of the modern Coverly children. He is very emotional and curious, although for some reason does not talk. He has a big crush on Hannah. He doubles with Augustus Coverly.

Auditions are a great opportunity for newcomers to the stage or theatre life! Volunteers are encouraged to get involved in all facets of production, including acting, building sets, operating lights, directing, stage managing, designing posters, prop sourcing, making costumes, selling concessions and ushering. We offer an energizing environment to collaborate with artists, learn something new, and help create some of the most exceptional regional theatre in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area.
